Future Sixth Graders

On Monday, January 28, the follow items were sent home about music offerings for next year at Olson.  All 5th grade students should return this form with their choice for music in 6th grade. Please return the completed forms to Mr. Dawson by Friday, February, 8, so that preparation can begin for your child's 6th grade music experience.

Here is a copy of the information about music offerings for 2013-2014 6th graders:

The Wizard of OZ

On February 7, 2013 Allen ISD 5th grade students will have the privilege of attending a special performance of The Wizard of Oz by the Allen High School Fine Arts Department.  In this musical, students will see performances by the top AHS band, choir, orchestra, theatre, and dance students.  They will also have an opportunity to view artwork presented by the AHS Art Department in the form of stage sets.

Students will travel by AISD bus on the 7th to a 10:30 a.m. showing at the new Allen ISD PAC (Performing Arts Center) located on the Allen High School campus.  After the show we will return to Olson.  We will have lunch at our regular time in the Olson Cafeteria.

The tickets and transportation are being paid for by a grant from the Foundation For Allen Schools and the Eugene McDermott Foundation.  The trip is completely free to our students thanks to this wonderful and generous donation!   If your child would like to send a personal word of thanks (which Mrs. McDermott loves to get from students!!)  The address is:

Mrs. Eugene McDermott

Music at Olson Elementary School is designed to equip the students with the skills necessary for musical understanding and enjoyment. Through active participation in the music making process, the students learn to:

· Read and notate music

· Listen to, analyze and describe music

· Sing and perform a varied repertoire of music

· Improvise melodies and variations

· Compose and arrange music within specified guidelines

· Understand music in relation to history, culture and the other arts

· Evaluate music and music performances

Students attend music classes 45 minutes each week. Classes offer a variety of activities, all designed to foster an appreciation of music and develop musical skills.  We sing, dance, play a variety of instruments, and learn to read music.  Small percussion, recorders (4th and 5th grades), and Orff melody instruments (xylophones and glockenspiels) are played in ensemble in a non-competitive atmosphere where one of the rewards is the pleasure of making good music with others. 6th graders are offered a choice of Choir, Band or Orchestra, which they attend two times each week. Performance opportunities are available to all students at Olson Elementary School to feature the musical talents of the students and showcase the learning that takes place in the music classroom.

Mr. Dawson is the music specialist at Olson Elementary. He brings thirteen years of experience in the music classroom. In addition, he has fifteen years of experience directing choirs at all levels in schools, in the community, and in church.  He received a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of New Orleans and is pursuing a Master of Choral Conducting from the University of Washington. He received Level One certifications in the Kodaly method from the University of North Texas, and Level One certification from the CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education from Elon College.
