UIL Academic Competition

 
School Coordinator:  Mrs. Holeman
Who:  Interested 2nd –6th Grade Students
What:  Various Academic and Fine Arts Teams Coached by School Staff Members
When:  Teams Begin Forming in Late October
District Contest Date:  January 19, 2013
Where:  Practices Occur at Reed and Competition Will be Held at Allen High School
UIL is a wonderful way for students to practice various academic skills and have an opportunity to compete against teams from other elementary campuses in Allen.  More information will be coming home soon. 
 

Pride Council

Sponsor:  Ms. J. Miller

Who:  4-6 Gr. Students Chosen by Ballot Vote of Homeroom Class
What:  Leadership Development and Community Service
When:  Twice Monthly After School
Start Date:   Late September (Has Already Begun This Year) 
Students may nominate themselves with parent permission and are voted to represent their homeroom classes.  These students lead various school service projects throughout the year.

Page Turners Book Club

Who: Any 3rd-6th Grade Students
What: Reading for Pleasure
When: Tuesdays 3:00-3:45 pm
Start Date: Sept. 13th

Battle of the Books
 
Sponsor: Mrs. Steffens
Wh Any 3rd-6th Grade Students
What: Team Competition Reading
When: Monthly Meetings
Start Date: End of September
Where: Reed Library
Teams of four read 12 books and prepare
for a competition against other teams to
determine which teams know the most
about the books read. The Battle of the
Books competition will occur in May.
 
Weekend Reading Bookbags
 
Sponsor: Mrs. Steffens
Who: Any K-2nd Grade Students
What: Reading for Pleasure
When: Fridays—Students bring
home a special bookbag filled with
books and activities
Start Date: Middle of Sept.
Students read as much as possible
during the weekend they receive
the bookbag. They will record information
about the stories they
read and return the bookbag the
following Monday to the library.
Our school goal is to read 2000
“weekend” books by the end of the
school year. If we reach our goal,
we will celebrate with a special
surprise!

K-Owl News Team
