KGLE3, Allen High School’s student-run broadcast, provides a daily connection with students through an engaging and entertaining program about all things AHS.
“We have a five-and-a-half minute window and everything that we put in can’t be longer,” explains KGLE3 Producer Aivry Lemons. “This is the length that students see, but what isn’t seen is the hours that go into the making of those few minutes.”
Every person is essential to creating a seamless broadcast, with roles ranging from lighting, graphics, anchors, camera operators, and producers.
“It is a very collaborative process,” said Aivry. “The students rotate between each role to learn every aspect of broadcasting, and they work in a professional-level studio with equipment for a true-to-life working experience.”
Prepping for the broadcast begins with finding and selecting stories from various organizations, sources, and events. The next step is to attend those events to film and edit videos and graphics to be featured on the broadcast. Anchors then use the information they receive to write scripts that share all the relevant information with the viewing audience.
To fit production time within the allotted class periods, the daily pre-recorded broadcast is completed in only one or two takes.
KGLE3 is more than a news broadcast. It is a blend of journalism, filmmaking, hard work, and talent. By sharing achievements and fostering school spirit, it provides a valuable service connecting and uniting the students and staff of Allen High School.
