About Bilingual Education

It is the policy of the state that every student in the state who has a home language other than English and who is identified as limited English proficient shall be provided a full opportunity to participate in a bilingual or English as a Second Language program, as required in the Texas Education Code, Chapter 29, Subchapter B.

ESL & Bilingual Program

  • Provides instruction for Emergent Bilingual students in the most appropriate program format in accordance with Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines.

  • Provides instruction that reflects the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and AISD curriculum guidelines in all content areas.

  • Promotes acceptance of Bilingual/ESL instruction as an integral part of the whole school program.

  • Promotes understanding and respect for diversity by students, parents, staff, and the community.

  • Supports staff development on cultural and linguistic diversity and second language acquisition strategies/methodologies.

  • Communicates success of Bilingual/ESL programs to the students, parents, district, and community.

Dual Language

Allen ISD offers a One-Way Dual Language program in Pre-K through 6th grade for eligible Spanish-speaking students. Dual Language Pre-K classes are offered at Anderson Early Childhood Center, while Kindergarten-6th grade classes are offered at Chandler Elementary. Transportation is provided to any eligible Dual Language Kindergarten-6th grade student who resides outside Chandler Elementary's attendance zone.

Dual language is a research-based program model used worldwide to foster language and literacy development. It has recently been recommended by TEA as the most successful bilingual model showing high academic achievement through the development of bilingualism, biliteracy, and socio-cultural competence among all participating students. Dual language is an enrichment program that provides content instruction in both English and Spanish.

English as a Second Language

ESL

Allen ISD offers an ESL instructional program in grades Pre-K-12th for eligible Emergent Bilingual students. The program considers the student's primary language, culture, and prior knowledge to be the foundation for academic success and social growth. Integrating language development and literacy skills across the curriculum (Pre-K-12) provides students with the opportunity to acquire a high level of literacy and fluency in English. In Allen ISD, ESL is taught by certified ESL teachers and is available at all campuses including the Dillard Special Achievement Center. ESL Summer School is available to eligible students.
